Miami is just Getting Warmed Up!

The great days of season have settled in Miami after a long hot summer. As we say goodbye to the sticky and humid days that brought with them many unexpected House Music Events and visits from our favorite DJs we’d like to recap some memorable moments from Miami’s Summer ‘08.

The Infamous Aquabooty team kept it real with their Summer Sessions at The Raleigh which included some amazing day parties with many of Miami’s hottest local DJs including Sheldon Prince, Jason Wiggill, DJ Aladdin, Aaron Feld and Djinji Brown.  Then at night, they brought us the New York vibe with the Penthouse Sessions that included sets from the Martinez Brothers, Mr.V and Osunlade.  And speaking of Osunlade, in May we had the pleasure of seeing the Yoruba Orchestra, Sigi and Quetzal Guerrero live in concert at Aquabooty’s Jazz Festival Afterparty.

Oh and how can we forget the impromptu party at Nikki Beach with an incredible set by Dennis Ferrer, that many missed because they thought it was just a rumor.  There was sweat, there was dancing and Dennis seemed so genuinely happy to be there that he sang to every track.  And most memorable for me was when Dennis threw on the last song of his set, Armand Van Helen’s ‘You Don’t Even Know Me’ and an odd smell started to fill the air.  Everyone thought Ferrer blew a speaker and when it was discovered that a ceiling blower caught on fire everyone chanted “The Roof, the roof, the roof is on fire” and Dennis got on the mic and chanted right along with us.

Although it seems like a lot- these parties are definitely nothing compared to the amazing House Music Events going in New York, Philly and Chicago.  But somehow I feel that this season that’s going to start to change.

The WMC dates were announced a few weeks ago and there seems to be an overall push in the House scene to get things moving much sooner than March.  Why wait when the weather down here is at its peak and more and more people are taking advantage of a weekend away from freezing their asses off back home.  There are even rumors of some northeastern parties coming down here as early as next month to warm up the House Heads and get the vibe of conference rolling. (wmc link to site)

Just in the month of October there have been a good number of House Music Events with Lars Behrenroth, DHM, Julius Papp, Miguel Migs, Jask, and Brian Tappert. November kicked off with a performance by Anane Vega and a few members of the Elements of Life Band accompanied by a set from Louie Vega in the Florida Room at The Delano Hotel and a live PA by Sunshine Jones put together by Retox at Blue as well as the visit from Marques Wyatt who played for Miami in celebration of Aquabooty’s 9th year anniversary.

To continue celebrating the start of season here’s what’s in line for the next few weeks: Gotsoul Sessions a residency with ‘jojoflores’ at Nikki Beach every Saturday from 12pm - 7pm; A Bi- Monthly residency with Louie Vega at The Vagabond, just started this past weekend. The Martinez Brothers are back to rock Miami with the Aquabooty promoters this Saturday November 22nd at club Voyage and Julius the Mad Thinker from 3Degrees Global will be playing at Nikki Beach, The Standard and Segafreddo on November 29th as well.

Finally- for the real House Heads who fene for their regular fix- we have our weekly residencies @  Segafredo - Rumba Samba Live with Dj Aladdin, @ Blue - Retox with rotating DJs, @ Nikki Beach - Amazing Sundays with JP Rigaud and our latest and newest additions to the events @ The Standard Hotel from 8pm-12am on Thursday nights for Djinji Brown’s Beat Stew and on Saturdays for Simple Saturdays @ The Standard (S3), which will have rotating DJs each week to continue giving exposure to local DJs and keep our community growing strong.

Miami has just woken up from a long hot slumber- like a bear just waking up from hiberating all winter long.  But of course here we do things backwards- party in the winter, rest up in the summer. Its one of the beauties of living here and we hope all other House Heads from around the globe will start to embrace what Miami has to offer during these winter months and start to make a home for House Music here.
